Microsoft - Where’s the Quality Gone? Vista + IIS + SQL Server 2005 = Hell

Microsoft and Quality are two mutually exclusive words nowadays, let me explain why I feel this way.

I installed Vista Ultimate on my desktop computer a few months ago. Recently I had the need to install the developer version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on this computer. I put the CD in the drive and the adventure begins.

SQL Server 2005 requires Internet Information Services (IIS) to be running. While running the installation wizard it detects that IIS is not running on my computer. I go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Internet Information Services Manager and sure enough it IS running, and correctly shows the files in my wwwroot directory. Unfortunately though, they will NOT display in my browser when I go to http://localhost After searching on Google for the cause and trying a few suggestions I found (uninstall IIS, uninstall WPA, reinstall), it still doesn’t work. Strike 1 for Microsoft.

Someone suggested that it might be a good idea to do an in-place update of Vista overtop of the existing Vista. I thought this might work as it would replace all of the files, including those possibly corrupted with fresh files. I start the update and it says it cannot continue because Nero 7 Burning Rom is not compatible with Vista. I had mistakenly installed Nero 7 a month ago thinking it would work. DOH! This resulted in another problem. Vista can’t remove it!! What good is an operating system if it can’t remove programs!! I had to download a utility from Nero to uninstall it. Strike 2 for Microsoft.

After a few hours of Vista Upgrading and patches, I finally had a fresh install of Vista installed. I sat back and prepared for a smooth installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Fresh upgrade of Vista (had to confirm its Genuine again and re-activate it), fresh copy of SQL Server2005, and fresh IIS setup. I start the install and BAM! It tells me that IIS isn’t running again. Strike 3!!

Why can’t Microsoft make their crap run with its own products!!!! Where the hell has the quality assurance gone!! Don’t they thoroughly test this stuff!!

As a side note, I installed SQL Server 2005 on my Windows XP laptop the first time flawlessly.

I’m sure I’ll be spending 3 hours or so on the phone with Microsoft trying to work this out.

Britney had yet another intervention happen and is currently in the UCLA Medical Center resting. She is supposedly also going to have some mental evaluations done because they have just figured out that she might have mental issues!! Way to go Sherlock! Her head shaving incident wasn’t a clue? How about attacking a car with an umbrella? Or possibly the little standoff she had with her kids at her house a couple of weeks ago? (more…)

Sorry for the downtime, switched servers etc.

Sorry for the downtime, Crusty Orange changed ownership the past few days, as well as switching servers. I should post a rant about Yahoo Domains, and how fricken useless they are as a domain registrar, but I have other things to rant about first!

Early Sesame Street Videos not Suitable for Children

Apparently nothing is sacred on Earth anymore. The early seasons (1 and 2) of the institutional children’s show “Sesame Street” were deemed inappropriate for children as they may have some material may not suit the minds of younger kids today.

According to a warning on Volumes 1 and 2, “Sesame Street: Old School” is adults-only: “These early ‘Sesame Street’ episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child.”

^Think about the show they are referring to and decide for yourself if you agree with the next statement:

America is on crack.

I read up more online about this issue and discovered that some producers and families feel that such actions and characters on the show are not productive in effectively teaching positive manners in our overly-protective society. To our soccer mom obsessive freak’s, they felt Oscar’s dumpster dwelling day’s in season 1 and 2 may cause a 3 year old to believe dumpster playtime was OK. Or that the Cookie Monster was a surefire influence to diabetes. But if that wasn’t enough they also felt that Big Bird was a reference to drugs. Because the bird was the only one who saw a large and fluffy elephant (thats right Snuffalufagus) it surely meant the bird was taking LSD. (more…)

George Mitchell…you killed baseball.

I would like to dedicate this rant to George Mitchell. Georgie, you single handedly killed baseball for me; something I only thought the introduction of woman to the sport could do.

Earlier today, Mr. Mitchell released a report to the public and the commissioner of baseball in regards to players who have and players who currently use performance enhancing drugs.

To be honest George, I really do not care about your little report. I have as much interest in your report as I do for the democratic process of voting in America. (Apparently 66% of Americans who also did not vote this past election agree with me as well)

Damn Writers Strike…

Why the hell is this writers strike still going? Which asshole is responsible for that?

For those of you who live under a rock, or if your an 16 year old teenage flake who lives off that MTV reality crap, here’s a recap. After watching how rich many television stars, such as Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien or Kiefer Sutherland have become, many writers for our favorite TV sitcoms have gone on strike. As they are underpaid for their work, such scribes feel unappreciated as even the stars with no acting ability, whom shall remain nameless *Lindsay Lohan, Drew Barrymore…*, come out with the pockets filled with cash. All these writers ask for is a little more money, but to the turds of high television, its too much to ask for. Our boy’s at NBC and Fox feel that their 10 million annual bonuses are way more important than fair pay to quality Americans.

I wonder what intelligence level it requires to hold a high executive position in such TV networks. You would imagine that the simplicity in this solution is one that would smack ‘em in the face. They don’t really want that much more money…we bring in butt loads with new episodes…they are doing most of the work to keep us in business…naw fuck it, let’s just show the last season of the series and see if anyone notices.

Sleeping and losing weight

I have come to a conclusion about many of the “discoveries” that researches come across today; they are utter bullshit.
Recently, researchers have ” presented a conundrum to new mothers, saying that women who want to lose the extra weight gained in pregnancy should try to get more sleep.” While they gave me there blah blah blah scientific garbage, which I’ll never test myself to find out if its right or wrong, I thought about the actual statement.

More sleep apparently means losing weight. If this was true, I would have six pack abs and wouldn’t have to go to that bullshit place they call a gym in the next town over.

I tried to use my wasted years of biology to ponder the veracity of this statement, but there was not much I could recall since the class was taught at 8 in the morning. Finally, after some common sense, I cracked this mystery.

A-Rod is A-Idiot.

Alex Rodriguez, claimed to be the best player in baseball, is the most annoying and stuck up prick to ever play the game since John Rocker- but he was more of a general ass due to anger issues; and yes they are completely different. Earlier this off season, A-Rod decided to steal the spot light of the Red Sox World Series victory by announcing he would be opting out of his contract with the New York Yankees. I’ve prepared my take on all that occurred immediately after his announcement.

RIP Joe Torre (1996-2007)

Joseph Torre, 67, beloved father, manager, and Yankee scapegoat, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on October 18 after a brave, seven-year battle with failed expectations. Torre previously served as manager of the Braves, Cardinals, and Mets before arriving in the Bronx in 1996, where he led his team to four World Series championships in five years. However, following a World Series loss to Arizona in 2001, Torre’s health slowly declined, culminating in his death Thursday morning. Though he is believed to have died of natural causes, authorities have not ruled out foul play, and have taken local businessman George Streinbrenner into custody for questioning. Torre is survived by his bench coach Don Mattingly, his closer Mariano Rivera, and his beloved lapdog “Derek.” Services will be held for the fallen manager all week on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight.
